CHENNAI: AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalithaa demanded a probe into the incident of suspicious death of M. Murugan (48), an Assistant Quality Control Officer, Civil Supplies godown, Milavittan, in Tuticorin.
In a statement, she said the culprits should be punished and the family of the deceased be compensated. The former CM reiterated her demand for a probe on smuggling of the commodities from the civil supplies outlets.
Saying that the attacks on Dalit officers were on the rise during the fourandhalf years of rule by the DMK, she said the family of the deceased Dalit official suspects foul play in his death and the matter should be immediately probed.
Murugan left for workplace on September 7 and his wife received a phone call saying he had been admitted at the Tuticorin government hospital after taking 'poison.' His wife, who noticed a wound below his left shoulder made a complaint to the district Police. Murugan died on September 11.
Suspecting foul play, his wife complained to the district collector. She had mentioned that her husband had told her that he expect some problems as he made a complaint against some officers of the TN Civil Supplies Corporation and also to the police about the smuggling of commodities that were supplied through it.
In her complaint, she demanded a proper enquiry to find out the reasons for her husband's death.
She also claimed that a diary and a bag, which her husband used to carry, were not restored to her. The AIADMK leader said the death of Dalit official should be probed to dispense the doubts.

Jaya demands probe into civil supplies officer death

Chennai, Sept. 17: AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa on Friday urged the state government to order an inquiry into the suspicious death of Murugan, assistant quality control inspector of Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation (TNCSC), in Thoothukudi. She also asked the government to give financial assistance to members of Murugan family.
In a statement issued here, Ms Jayalalithaa said Murguan’s wife had petitioned the district collector seeking an inquiry into her husband’s death as he had exposed ration items smuggling racket in August this year.
The AIADMK supremo said Murugan’s wife made it clear that there was no problem in their personal life and he had feared threat to his life from the former zonal manager of TNCSC against whom he had complained to his higher authorities and police in connection with smuggling of ration items.
She said his wife has asked the collector to order an inquiry into her husband’s death as attempts were being made to cover up the murder.
Ms Jayalalithaa recalled that Murugan who went to work as usual on September 7 did not return home and his wife was informed that her husband had been admitted to the government general hospital in Thoothukudi for consuming poison.
“After noticing bleeding injuries on Murugan’s shoulder, she made a complaint to the district superintendent of police on September 9 and two days later he died,” she said.
She condemned the DMK government for failing to take steps to prevent smuggling of ration items and also alleged that the ruling party men were involved in the smuggling.

Customs red-faced over ‘smuggled’ rice

Feb. 14: The much-hyped seizure of 2,212 tonnes of ‘smuggled’ PDS rice worth Rs 3.89 crore by customs officials and district civil supplies officials from Tuticorin port in the last week of January turned out to be a major faux pas by the officials.
The consignment was part of legally sanctioned quantity going to Maldives for public distribution there, as per an agreement between the Indian and Maldives governments.
A senior customs official disclosed on Sunday that the seizure was a mistake, carried out by overenthusiastic officials, and added that the seized rice had been handed over to the Thoothukudi collector for further action. It would be returned to Hari and Co, the firm which was exporting the rice to State Trading Organisation, Maldives.
Generally, no regular rice will be allowed to be exported from India. But, Hari and Co was one of the two exporters allowed to export regular rice to fulfil the commitment made by the Indian government to send 10,000 tonnes of rice to Maldives yearly.
“We had sent one consignment in November. In January, we were sending the last consignment when the seizure happened. A customs official had collected some leftover rice from our place and sent it for quality test at civil supplies. The test result indicated it could be PDS rice. The official immediately seized the entire quantity and was not ready to see our documents, which clearly showed that our export consignment of regular rice was certainly official,” Mr R. Arul, general manager of Hari & Co, told this newspaper on Sunday.
We had procured the rice from 15 mills in Nalgonda district, Andhra Pradesh. The rice bags reached Thoothukudi in 227 lorries after crossing 10 check-posts. We had papers to show all these besides the payment details. But at the time of seizure, the officials were not ready to look at the papers, Mr Arul added. The rice was released only after the firm approached the court.
When contacted, a senior customs official claimed that the seizure was made as per the official communication from the district administration.

Govt promises impartial probe into official’s death

Chennai: The state government on Saturday said the police would conduct an impartial investigation into the death of M Murugan, a deputy quality control inspector attached to the Thoothukudi depot of the state civil supplies corporation, in the light of the family of the deceased officer suspecting foul play in his death.
Murugan’s wife Selvi and other relatives have been refusing to accept his body, alleging that he may have been murdered by other employees allegedly involved in smuggling of essential commodities.
They claim that Murugan had complained to the authorities about illegal activities going on in the depot and that he had feared for his life.
However, food minister E V Velu dismissed the allegation in a statement here and said the family was trying to spread canards.
He claimed that Murugan had died after swallowing insecticide and that the postmortem examination had confirmed the cause of death.
“Murugan, who committed suicide, had suffered a bout of brain fever. He had several times in the past told his colleagues that due to stress and ill-health he wanted to commit suicide,” food minister Velu said.
In an apparent reference to political statements on the issue, he deplored “mischievous” attempts to give a caste colour to the incident as the officer concerned was a dalit.
On the day of the incident (September 7), he had consumed an insecticide in office, even while an audit was going on into the accounts of the depot. Within 30 minutes he was taken to the Thoothukudi general hospital and admitted in the intensive care unit. However, he died on September 11, the minister said.
“While the police are holding an impartial probe, the deceased’s wife was not happy with the investigation. Therefore, a different set of officers have been appointed. The district administration and the police will hold an impartial probe and take further action,” the minister said.
Meanwhile, Pattali Makkal Katchi founder S Ramadoss demanded a judicial probe by a high court judge into Murugan’s death, saying the government could not brush aside Selvi’s charge that there was an attempt to cover up the ‘murder’.

தலித் அதிகாரிகள் தாக்கப்படுவது தொடர்கதையாகி விட்டது: ஜெயலலிதா
சென்னை, செப்.17: திமுக ஆட்சியில் தலித் சமுதாயத்தைச் சேர்ந்த அதிகாரிகள் பலர் தாக்கப்படுவது தொடர்கதையாகிவிட்டது என்று அதிமுக பொதுச்செயலர் ஜெயலலிதா குற்றம்சாட்டியுள்ளார்.
இது குறித்து வெள்ளிக்கிழமை அவர் வெளியிட்ட அறிக்கை:
கடந்த நான்கரை ஆண்டு கால தி.மு.க. ஆட்சியில், கன்னியாகுமரி மாவட்ட துணை ஆட்சியர், இந்திய ஆட்சிப் பணி அதிகாரி, திருநெல்வேலி அண்ணா பல்கலைக்கழக துணை வேந்தர் என தலித் சமுதாயத்தைச் சேர்ந்த அதிகாரிகள் பலர் தாக்கப்படுவது தொடர்கதையாகி விட்டது.
அந்த வகையில் தற்போது நுகர்பொருள் வாணிபக் கழகத்தின் தூத்துக்குடி மண்டல உதவி தரக் கட்டுப்பாட்டு ஆய்வாளர் மு. முருகன் தாக்கப்பட்டு மரணமடைந்திருக்கிறார்.
கடந்த 7-ம் தேதி வழக்கம் போல் அலுவலகத்திற்குச் சென்ற முருகன் வீடு திரும்பவில்லை. ஆனால், மருந்து குடித்ததன் காரணமாக தூத்துக்குடி அரசு பொது மருத்துவமனையில் அனுமதிக்கப்பட்டு இருப்பதாக அவரது வீட்டிற்கு தகவல் மட்டும் அனுப்பப்பட்டது.
அவரது மனைவி உடனடியாக மருத்துவமனைக்குச் சென்று தன் கணவரைப் பார்த்திருக்கிறார். தன் கணவரின் இடது தோள்பட்டைக்கு கீழ் ரத்த காயம் இருந்ததைக் கண்டு அதிர்ச்சி அடைந்துள்ளார். இது குறித்து மாவட்ட காவல் துறை கண்காணிப்பாளரிடம் கடந்த 9-ம் தேதி புகார் கொடுத்திருக்கிறார். இந்நிலையில், கடந்த 11-ம் தேதி முருகன் மரணமடைந்துவிட்டதாக தெரிவிக்கப்பட்டது.
தனது கணவரின் மரணத்தில் ஏதோ மர்மம் இருப்பதை அறிந்த அவரது மனைவி, 13.9.2010 அன்று தூத்துக்குடி மாவட்ட ஆட்சித் தலைவரிடம் புகார் தெரிவித்துள்ளார். அதில், தன் கணவருக்கு குடும்பத்தில் எந்தப் பிரச்னையும் இல்லை என்றும், ரேஷன் பொருள்கள் கடத்தல் தொடர்பாக முந்தைய மண்டல மேலாளர் மற்றும் சிலர் மீது நுகர்பொருள் வாணிபக் கழக நிர்வாகத்திடமும், காவல் துறையிடமும் கடந்த ஆகஸ்ட் மாதம் புகார்கள் வழங்கியதாகவும் கூறியிருக்கிறார்.
மேற்படி நபர்களால் தனக்கு ஆபத்து நேரிடலாம் என்று தன் கணவர் தன்னிடம் ஏற்கெனவே கூறியதாகவும், கொலையை மறைப்பதற்கான முயற்சி நடப்பதாகவும், இது குறித்து உரிய விசாரணை நடத்தி வழக்கு பதிவு செய்ய வேண்டும் என்றும் கோரியுள்ளார்.
மேலும், தன் கணவர் வழக்கமாக கையில் வைத்திருக்கும் டைரி மற்றும் பை தன்னிடம் ஒப்படைக்கப்படவில்லை என்றும் தெரிவித்திருக்கிறார்.
எனவே கொலையை தற்கொலையாக காவல் துறையினர் மாற்றி இருக்கின்றனரோ என்ற சந்தேகம் இப்போது அப்பகுதி மக்கள் மனதில் எழுந்துள்ளது. ரேஷன் பொருள்களை கடத்துபவர்கள் தண்டிக்கப்பட வேண்டும் என்ற அக்கறை முதல்வர் கருணாநிதிக்கு இருந்திருந்தால், கடத்தலில் ஈடுபட்டவர்களை கைது செய்ய உத்தரவிட்டிருக்க வேண்டும்.
